Lots of our customers have asked how we build their golf clubs. We have therefore decided to do a feature outlining the stages we go through when building an individual iron, this particular club is a part of our demo fitting bag for 2009,it is the Snake Eyes Viper XT iron.
The components
Step 1
Tip Trimming - This is essential to ensure the golf club plays at the correct flex. Too little taken off the tip and it will be too flexible, too much and it will play too stiff. Having found the correct length via the factories trimming charts, the chop saw takes care of the rest!
Step 2
The frequency machine is used to make sure the flex is correct. Although the shaft should now be at the required regular flex having followed the trimming instructions correctly, they can sometimes not be as expected. Adjustments to the tip trimming can be carried out at this stage in accordance to the frequency reading if needed.
We also use this machine to frequency match whole sets of irons making them a consistent flex throughout.
Step 3
Having now obtained the correct flex, the tip is prepared, the ferrule is fitted and the shaft is glued into the clubhead and left to dry.
Step 4
Having cut the club to the required playing length, the swing weight is then checked at this stage (This is how the club feels in the players hands). It can be increased by adding weight down the shaft before the grip is fitted. This club was measuring slightly on the light side so I added weight via tungsten powder down the shaft.
Step 5
The club is taking shape now!
The grip is now fitted. I chose the brand new Golf Pride DD2 at a men's standard thickness for this iron. Layers of tape can be added under the grip to alter the thickness if required.

Step 6
The loft and Lie is the final major stage before the finishing touches are made to the club. The correct loft will ensure the desired distance is achieved in relation to the set. The correct lie will ensure the clubhead is presented to the ball perfectly at impact ensuring accuracy of shot and precision of strike. I altered the loft by 1 degree stronger and the lie by 1 degree more upright to make the club play at the factories standard specification. A couple of manipulations in the loft and lie machine achieved this.I feel it is important to stress at this stage that sets from 'off the rack' often do not go through this stage, resulting to a set of clubs that do not match and are inconsistant to one another. Therefore creating an impossible set of clubs for a player to reach their full potential.
